There are various types of headaches that we tend to suffer from. The most common ones will be discussed below. Have your noticed that you neck is achy or you keep having these throbbing headaches? Well we are here to help put you and your headaches at ease.
Cervicogenic headaches
This headache is caused by dysfunction of the structures in your neck including the muscles, joints, ligaments and discs. This is a common cause for chronic headaches and is often misdiagnosed. These types of headaches can also be a result from sustained postures, whiplash, sports injuries, and many other causes.
Symptoms:
The range of motion of your neck is reduced
Moving your head makes the headache worse
Pain or discomfort coming from your neck and/or shoulders
Pain at the top of your neck and/or base of head
Pain radiating to forehead, temples or around the eyes
Tension type Headache
Is a common headache type with a lifetime prevalence in the general public ranging in various studies between 20% and 78% (ICDH-3, 2021). It is not known what the exact cause for these headaches are, but don’t worry there are treatment options to help you.
Symptoms:
Headache lasting 30 min to 7 days
Band like sensation around the head
Pressing or tightening feeling around the head
Migraine
These can be moderate to quite severe headaches, more commonly without aura (visual symptoms). The exact cause is unknown but there seems an agreement that it’s due to abnormal brain activity which affects the blood vessels, nerve signals and chemicals in the brain. Migraines are often triggered generally by stress, food, hormones, environment and many more. These triggers are very unique to the individual, so it’s important that you keep a diary to see what the common links are to determine your triggers.
Symptoms:
Headache lasting 4 – 72 hours
One side of the head
Throbbing or pulsating type of pain
Moderate to severe pain
Aggravated by physical activity
Nausea and/or vomiting
Sensitivity to light and/or sound
Aura (visual disturbance)
