Conditions treated with Dry Needling

Dry needling is used for pain relief in a variety of musculoskeletal conditions causing pain in the body. Acupuncture and dry needling techniques are similar, but their rationale and use in treatment are different.

Analgesia produced by needling a pain spot is called the ‘needle effect’. Dry needling for treating trigger points was first introduced by Czech physician Karel Lewit in 1979. He noticed that the success of injections into trigger points in relieving pain was apparently unconnected to the analgesic used. Dry needling is a useful adjunct to treatment when the use of injection is not appropriate.

Frequently asked questions about Dry Needling

Your practitioner will explain what they are doing throughout the treatment.  You will have to lie or sit down and may have to remove part of your clothing so the practitioner can reach the trigger point.

Acupuncture needles are very fine and the practitioners are experienced in inserting them so they do not cause pain. You may experience mild tingling or a dull ache during treatment.

A trigger point is a sensitive area of the body, stimulation or irritation of which causes a specific effect in another part, especially a tender area in a muscle which causes generalized musculoskeletal pain when overstimulated. If Dry Needling does not work you can see one of our SEM or MSK doctors for a steroid Trigger Point injection.

A number of our practitioners are qualified to use Dry Needling as a treatment.   Check out the profiles below to see who can treat you with Acupuncture or Dry Needling.   All our practitioners will assess you thoroughly to determine what is the best type of treatment for your condition.
