The lower back is a complex structure of bones, ligaments, muscles and tendons which all work together to provide the low back with support, strength and flexibility. However, this complexity of the low back does make it prone to injury. There are many structures in the lower back that can cause pain, commonly these are the facet joints, intervertebral discs and the surrounding ligaments and muscles.
There are many causes of low back pain such as overuse, unaccustomed activity, trauma, sports injury, wear and tear in the small joints of the spine (facet joints) slipped disc (herniated/bulging) or strains from heavy lifting or carrying heavy loads. There may be other causes like spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis.
The practitioner will take an in-depth case history, focusing on the onset of the lower back pain. There will then be a physical examination of the low back and pelvis. The practitioner will make a diagnosis based on the case history and the findings of the physical examination. In some cases further investigations, such as MRI/Xray may be required.
To begin with we would suggest you book in with an Osteopath, Chiropractor or Physio who offer manual therapies such as mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue massage etc. In addition, you may be given exercises to do. If your back pain persists or is very acute then they can refer you to our back pain specialists (MSK and pain doctors) for spinal injection if appropriate.
Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways. They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition.
Manual therapies such as Osteopathy, Chiropractic and Physiotherapy can treat back pain very effectively. You may be given exercises to do at home. If back pain is very severe or persistent and does not respond to manual therapy and exercises, our doctors can perform spinal injections including epidurals, facet joint injections, prolotherapy and radiofrequency denervation. Some injections can be diagnostic.
‘I’ve had back and neck pain for around 5 years and have seen a variety of physios through different referrals. I always get short term relief but no one has ever looked to fix the underlying long term issue of why my problems always come back. Mark was the complete opposite and focused solely on the underlying cause and looked to fix that using Connect Therapy™. The difference after 1 session was remarkable and I woke up without severe back and neck pain for the first time in years. After 6 sessions I was able to lift weights again and the education received through I cannot be more grateful and wish I had discovered Connect Therapy™ earlier.’
I wanted to thank Ilqua for her care and attention she gave me following my spinal procedure carried out by Dr Simon Petrides.
She built up specific core strengthening exercises very carefully, which worked around my rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia problems as well. I would recommend her to anyone seeking this type of physiotherapy.
