Post Hip Replacement Pain

Hip replacements are amongst the most successful orthopaedic surgical procedures for arthritic hips, but not everyone is pain free after the procedure.  About 10% of people will be less than satisfied with the results.

Causes of Post Hip Replacement Pain

Loosening of the implant is the most common cause, years or decades after the replacement. Infection is a possibility soon after the operation and pain can occur due to weak muscles or malalignment following surgery.

Pain can occur when rising from sitting or when navigating stairs. Pain accompanied by swelling, redness and fever suggests an infection and urgent medical attention should be sought.

A detailed physical assessment and history of the pain followed possibly by x-rays or blood tests can assist in the diagnosis of the cause of the pain.

We suggest you see one of our MSK or SEM doctors who may suggest further investigation or physio or, occasionally, a referral back to your surgeon.

Come for an assessment with our MSK or SEM doctors to discuss alternative treatments to alleviate pain and delay surgery by using exercise programmes and a number of different injection options such as cortisone, hyaluronic acid, PRP or Prolotherapy.

Treatments for Post Hip Replacement Pain

It is important to have an accurate diagnosis and, in some situations, pain can be treated with physical therapy or medication. If loosening or infection is suspected then a surgical opinion will be necessary. A rehab programme of exercises can strengthen the muscles and stabilise the joint.

Lorena-Testimonial

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).

Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
