Sports massage helps alleviate the stress and tension that builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur due to overexertion or overuse, massage can alleviate them quickly and effectively.
It can help prevent niggling injuries getting in the way of peak performance or every day enjoyment of sporting activities. Sports massage is not just for the sportsperson. Anyone can benefit from sports massage to alleviate discomfort caused by physically demanding jobs, sedentary jobs or stress. Occupational, emotional and postural stress may produce similar symptoms to sports injury.

Sports Massage is a deep and intense massage based on the various elements of Swedish Massage. It incorporates stretching, compression, friction, toning and trigger point response techniques similar to Acupressure and Shiatsu. The therapist combines these techniques to ensure optimum performance and injury free training for the client as well as minimising post event injuries.
Sports Massage will speed up the healing process and ease discomfort for acute and chronic injuries. Pre-event and post-event massage are tailored to the stage of the athlete’s programme. Various Sports Massage techniques enhance the body’s own recovery process by reducing muscle spasm, increasing circulation and reducing metabolic build up.
Treatment for acute and chronic sports injuries, arthritis, soft tissue injuries and exercise medicine consultations
If a muscle is very sore or recently injured it may be a bit sore to have manual therapy and massage. The therapist will explain what they are doing and you can tell them if it is too painful to cope with. Often, if a tissue is tight it will be quite painful to stretch it but there will be benefits after the treatment.
Pre event and post event massage are tailored for distinct purposes. Pre- event treatment is used as a supplement to an athlete’s warm up, enhancing circulation and reducing excess mental and muscle tension prior to competition. Post event massage aims to reduce muscle spasms and metabolic build up that occurs with rigorous exercise.
You will have to remove outer clothing so the therapist can reach the affected body part. If you would like to wear shorts you can get changed before your appointment.
We have several practitioners who offer Sports Massage and if you need referral for a specific injury they can refer you to one of the other practitioners or our Sport & Exercise Medicine Doctors.
