Pubic Pain / SPD

Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction is a group of symptoms that cause pain in the pelvic area. It usually occurs after pregnancy and in the front or the back where it is called pelvic girdle pain. It can be so severe that it affects mobility.

Causes of Pubic Pain / SPD

During pregnancy a hormone called relaxin loosens ligaments in the pelvis and sacroiliac joints and in the pubic bone. This leads to too much mobility in the joints and pain on certain movements.

Pain occurs in the front of the pubic area or in the low back or between the legs and can travel to the thighs. There may even be a ‘clicking’ or ‘popping’ sound. The pain is worse on walking, using stairs or putting your weight on one leg.

Early intervention is important to prevent this from becoming a chronic problem. It is diagnosed by a physical examination and a history of what causes the pain and when it hurts.

Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physios can help with this problem especially during pregnancy. Treatment is gentle and safe. If the pain persists after delivery, injections can be effective to reduce inflammation with cortisone or strengthen the ligaments with Prolotherapy injections.

Make sure your weight is evenly distributed when standing, avoid twisting while bending, don’t carry a child on your hip, try not to cross your legs, avoid heavy lifting, hoovering or pushing heavy objects.  Our advice is to seek early treatment as this can help speed up recovery.

Treatments for Pubic Pain / SPD

Manual therapies such as Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy can help. Gentle exercises and stretching along with supportive equipment such as pelvic belts are useful. If the condition is resistant then Prolotherapy or Cortisone injections can be remarkably effective.

Blackberry Clinic receives glowing feedback!

Lorena-Testimonial

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).

Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
