Pilates Based Rehabilitation

Pilates is a specific type of exercise, the aim of which is to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing. Pilates exercises are done on a mat or using special equipment such as the Reformer. With its’ system of pulleys and springs, the apparatus can provide either resistance or support, depending on your needs.

Conditions treated with Pilates Based Rehabilitation

People of all ages and levels of ability can benefit from Pilates. Regular Pilates can improve posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility. It can also relieve stress and tension.  As Pilates can help develop body strength and flexibility it can help reduce the risk of injury in elite athletes and dancers.

There is evidence that Pilates can help reduce back pain. At Blackberry Clinic Milton Keynes our physiotherapist, Alastair Greetham, is trained to use Pilates exercise therapeutically and treats patients regularly using the Reformer in the exercise studio. Other physiotherapists also use Pilates mat based exercises for rehabilitation.  There are regular Pilates Classes with a trained Pilates teacher for members and non-members of Blackberry Gym.  Several of our practitioners at other Blackberry Clinics offer Pilates based rehabilitation, please check out their profiles.

Therapeutic Pilates is tailored by the trained health professional to be effective for the specific problem you are being treated for. This is different from a Pilates Class where the Pilates teacher is not medically qualified. If you are suffering from back pain make sure you see a qualified health professional such as a Physio, Osteopath or Chiropractor to check that it is safe for you to start Pilates classes.  Classes can be beneficial and perfectly safe but it may be a good idea to have some individual treatment first to make sure you are doing the exercises safely and effectively.

A number of our practitioners use Pilates based rehabilitation techniques.   Check out their profiles to see who can help you but if you are still not sure please call our friendly receptionists who can help you make the decision.

You should wear comfortable clothing suitable for gentle exercise and you can get changed before your appointment at the Blackberry Clinic.
