Instability happens when tissues such as ligaments and muscles weaken and they cannot stabilise the joint in its proper position. Joints need to be mobile but they also need to be strong. Ligaments hold the joints together and can become overstretched, resulting in pain or even subluxation or dislocation of the joint. Unfortunately, excessive movement within the joint can lead to joint arthritis.
Traumatic sports injuries can cause stretching or rupture of ligaments. Over-use such as in swimming or tennis can cause shoulder instability. More generalised instability is known as being double jointed and may be as a result of a hypermobility syndrome.
Symptoms can include pain or repeated dislocations along with a feeling that the joint ‘goes out’. Instability can affect the back, the sacroiliac joint, the pubic bone, the knee, shoulder, thumb, ankle and other joints.
A thorough examination will be carried out by Blackberry Clinic therapists or one of the Blackberry Clinic MSK doctors. You may also need imaging tests such as X rays or MRI scans to determine a full diagnosis and the best course of treatment.
You can see any of our practitioners for most conditions but check out their profiles for more information and specific interests. You may be referred to one of the doctors for an opinion on prolotherapy or PRP injections which can be used to stabilise loose joints.
Prolotherapy is an injection of a strong solution of sugar or of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) into affected ligaments. This promotes a healing response, tightening and strengthening ligaments. Blackberry Clinic specialises in this form of treatment.
Conservative treatments may involve rest and analgesia. Splints and taping can also be used. Exercise programmes can be useful to strengthen muscles. At Blackberry Clinic we find prolotherapy injections to be of great benefit in the treatment of unstable joints.
I wanted to share my gratitude with you following my Facet Joint Denervation in May. I am now 6 weeks on and I have gone from being able to do less than 200 steps a day to 6000 steps. My pain is greatly reduced, to almost non-existent, causing my moods and general health to be so much better.
I am even signed up to do the Million Step Challenge. Thank you so much for all your help and being such a kind and welcoming team. I will be forever grateful for you to giving me my life back.
