A nerve can become trapped or compressed when the nerve is pinched by surrounding tissues such as bones, muscles, tendons or cartilage. This pressure makes it hard for the nerve to work properly and can result in symptoms of pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the part of the body supplied by that nerve.
A number of conditions can cause a nerve to become compressed, including injury, arthritis, overuse, repetitive work or, in the case of the spine, a slipped disc. In the wrist a number of tissues can press on the nerve causing carpal tunnel syndrome.
The area of the body supplied by the nerve may have numbness or tingling sensations (pins and needles). The pain felt may be sharp or achy and there may be muscle weakness and a feeling that the body part has ‘gone to sleep’.
A thorough physical examination and questions about your pain will help determine where your pain is coming from and if it is caused by a trapped nerve. If necessary, our therapists can refer you for further investigation such as an MRI to see which tissues are pressing on the nerve and why.
We recommend that you book in with one of our physios, osteopaths or chiropractors for a full assessment. If they feel it is necessary, they can refer you to one of our specialist Pain Management or MSK doctors for further tests or they can treat your pain with manual therapy and an exercise programme.
Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways. They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition
The treatment for trapped nerves will depend on where in the body the problem lies. Most trapped nerves respond well to manual therapy such as manipulation and mobilisation. If the problem is persistent or severe, we suggest you book in with our Pain Management doctors.
After a course of Prolotherapy my back pain has gone and I live a normal life. I can’t thank Dr Petrides enough for giving me back my quality of life
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).
Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
Just wanted to say please pass my thanks to my osteopath, I came yesterday with terrible back and shoulder pain and today I am pain free, am well delighted as had a day planned with friends was worried I wouldn’t enjoy, please pass my thanks onto her.
Following treatment at Blackberry Clinic, Milton Keynes my back pain improved and I could play for my country again
