Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) is the term now being used by the medical community to describe what was previously known as symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD). It is the name given to a group of symptoms arising from the joints at the front and/or back of your pelvis.
In the UK it is estimated that one in five women suffer with pelvic girdle Pain (PGP) during or after pregnancy
Pelvic girdle pain can be caused by irritation or inflammation of the joints of the pelvis, stiffness of pelvic joints (sacroiliac joints) on one side, or laxity in the ligaments that provide the crucial stability to the pelvic joint complex which includes the pubic symphysis.
Your midwife may suggest you see a Chiropractor, Osteopath or Physiotherapist if they suspect you are suffering from pelvic girdle pain. They will then take a case history and perform a physical examination that will involve looking at your posture and your back and hip movements. They will aim to rule out other causes of pelvic pain such as urinary tract infections, problems of the lumbar spine and Braxton Hicks or labour contractions.

Symptoms can be controlled during and after pregnancy with manual therapy such as chiropractic, osteopathy or physiotherapy. For pain persisting after pregnancy, prolotherapy injections of a strong sugar solution can strengthen the ligaments supporting the sacroiliac joints and the pubic region.
Following treatment at Blackberry Clinic, Milton Keynes my back pain improved and I could play for my country again
Just wanted to say please pass my thanks to my osteopath, I came yesterday with terrible back and shoulder pain and today I am pain free, am well delighted as had a day planned with friends was worried I wouldn’t enjoy, please pass my thanks onto her.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).
Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
After a course of Prolotherapy my back pain has gone and I live a normal life. I can’t thank Dr Petrides enough for giving me back my quality of life
