Metatarsalgia

This is a condition where the ball of the foot becomes painful and inflamed. You may feel like you are ‘walking on pebbles’ or have a vague ache or burning pain in your foot.  It may develop with impact exercise such as running or jumping or if you have a foot deformity or wear tight shoes. It is not serious but can restrict your mobility and be very painful.

Causes of Metatarsalgia

This condition can be caused by high impact sports or intense training or activity. Feet with a high medial arch and foot deformities such as hammer toe or bunions may lead to the development of metatarsalgia. Being overweight and wearing tight shoes may also cause the problem to occur.

  • Sharp, aching or burning pain in the ball of the foot
  • Pain that worsens when you stand, run or walk
  • Pain that improves with rest
  • Sharp or shooting pain, numbness or tingling in your toes
  • A feeling of having a pebble in your shoe

An in-depth case history and physical examination should be all that is required to diagnose metatarsalgia. In some cases, further diagnostic imaging may be required to rule out a stress fracture or a neuroma (nerve swelling).

We would suggest you book in with the Podiatrist or one of our Physiotherapists with a special interest in biomechanics of the foot. You may need orthotics (specially made insoles) and we can arrange this at Blackberry Clinic Milton Keynes

Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways.  They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition.

Treatments for Metatarsalgia

Resting or changing footwear may help. Orthotics may be indicated as these help to correct biomechanical imbalance in the foot.  It is important to have a thorough examination with a physio or podatrist to ensure that it is not a stress fracture or neuroma causing the pain.

Lorena-Testimonial

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).

Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
