Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs due to compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel at the wrist. This compression causes tingling, numbness and pain in your hand and fingers. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be associated with repetitive movements like using a keyboard. You may notice that your thumb feels weak or that you have difficulty gripping. These symptoms may start slowly and may be intermittent, with worse pain felt at night.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can occur due to repetitive movements such as typing or working with vibrating machinery. Underlying conditions such as hypothyroidism, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes predispose people to having carpal tunnel syndrome.
Pain, numbness, tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and thumb side of ring finger. Symptoms usually start gradually and at night. Pain may travel up the arm.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually diagnosed after an in-depth case history and physical examination. The examination will focus on the wrist, but the therapist will also examine around the shoulder and neck to make an accurate diagnosis. Nerve conduction studies can confirm the diagnosis.
You can see any of our practitioners for most conditions but check out their profiles for more information and specific interests.
Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways. They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition.
Rest is a good treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and a wrist splint may be useful worn at night. Anti-inflammatory medication may also help. At Blackberry Clinic we offer steroid injections to reduce the inflammation but you will have to rest the wrist to make sure the injection is effective.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).
Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
