The hand is made up of many small bones held together with ligaments and moved by tendons. Any of these structures can cause pain if they become inflamed or stiff due to overuse, arthritis or sports injury.
Common conditions causing hand pain include carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis at the base of the thumb, tendonitis and repetitive strain injury. Arthritis can also affect the joints of the fingers. Fibrous nodules can cause trigger finger or thumb where the finger or thumb ‘click and get stuck. Fractures of the bones of the hand can be caused by falls or impact to the hand.
