The ligaments hold the joints in a stable position and they can get stretched, torn or ruptured in an injury. The knee and ankle are particularly prone to ligament injury especially in athletes.
Common ligaments to injure are those of the ankle and the knee. A twisting injury can cause the ligaments to tear or rupture. An example in the knee is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) which is commonly ruptured in footballers or rugby players.
Pain may be sudden and severe and you may feel a loud pop or snap as the injury occurs. Swelling will occur within the first 24 hours and the joint may feel unstable. You may not be able to weight bear on the joint at all. If you have a less severe injury than this your symptoms may not be as obvious.
You will need a thorough physical examination of the joint and will need to describe the mechanism of the injury to your therapist or doctor. In some cases, you will be referred for an MRI scan to see if the ligament has ruptured completely.
In the first instance for ligament injuries we would suggest you book in with one of our Blackberry Clinic physios for an examination. If the injury is severe and you think you need an MRI scan our Blackberry Clinic Doctors can arrange this for you, often on the same day as your consultation. You can see any of our practitioners for most conditions but check out their profiles for more information and specific interests
This will depend on how severe your injury is. If you require surgery you will need physiotherapy afterwards to help you make a full recovery and return to your normal activities and sport.
The treatment for ligament injuries depends on the severity of the injury. In most cases the pain will reduce with ice, rest and anti-inflammatory medication. You can then start a gentle graduated programme of exercises to strengthen your muscles. If you have surgery you will need physiotherapy afterwards.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).
Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
