Spinal stenosis occurs due to the abnormal narrowing of the space in the spinal canal, which can be caused by either bony or soft tissue encroachment. Stenosis typically affects people over 50 years old. This is caused by age-related degenerative changes of the lumbar facet joints and discs, leading to reduced disc height and possible bulging of the disc. Stenosis may also arise due to a degenerative spondylolisthesis, or facet joint osteoarthritis.
If you have spinal stenosis in your neck you may experience numbness or tingling in a hand, arm, foot or leg as well as weakness in these areas.
You may experience problems with walking and balance and have neck pain. See below for symptoms of spinal stenosis in the back.
Spinal stenosis in the low back may give you numbness or tingling in a foot or leg and weakness in the foot or leg. You may have pain or cramping in one or both legs when you stand for long periods of time or when you walk, which usually eases when you bend forward or sit. You may experience back pain and in severe cases, bowel or bladder dysfunction (urinary urgency and incontinence)
If spinal stenosis is suspected, individuals will usually be referred for further investigations (e.g. X-ray, MRI scan) to confirm the diagnosis and to advise on appropriate treatment. Physical examination sometimes demonstrates neurological deficits or exacerbation of symptoms with spinal positioning. There is no direct cure for spinal stenosis, but treatments to relieve the symptoms are effective and can improve the outlook.

If you have a confirmed diagnosis of spinal stenosis following MRI, X-ray or CT there are various treatments which will help to manage the symptoms. Physical therapy will help build up strength and endurance. Steroid injections work to reduce inflammation and make it easier to exercise.
