Snapping Hip

Snapping hip is a condition resulting in a snapping feeling when the hip is flexed or extended. There may be a snapping or popping feeling along with pain and discomfort.

Extra-articular snapping hip is caused when the muscles and tendons on the side of the hip slide back and forth across the greater trochanter.

Intra-articular snapping hip is caused when the psoas tendon, the hip capsule or one of the hip flexor muscles produces a snapping sensation as it crosses directly over the front of the hip joint due to labral tears, hip impingement or loose bodies.

Causes of Snapping Hip

Causes are not fully understood.  Athletes, ballet dancers and gymnasts have an increased risk due to the physical demands of the sport. Repeated hip flexion can lead to injury in 15 to 40 year olds.

There are biomechanical causes such as misalignment of the lower leg, pronation of the foot, muscle imbalance,  pelvic asymmetry.

Snapping hip is a condition resulting in a snapping feeling when the hip is flexed or extended. This can be so severe that in rare cases it feels that the hip gets stuck.

The pain reduces with rest. The condition is commonly classified by the location of the structures that cause the snapping feeling.

Diagnosis requires a careful history and physical examination. Ultrasound and MRI along with an extensive biomechanical assessment can determine the underlying causes.

It is important to correct any biomechanical abnormality and stretch tight muscles and other tissues. Strengthening exercises can help realign the lower limb and reduce the snapping. Injections are sometimes used to reduce inflammation of tissues or using Cortisone or to strengthen and stabilise tissues using hypertonic dextrose as in Prolotherapy injections

It is rare for surgical remedies to be required

Initially an appointment with one of our Physios, Osteopaths or Chiropractors would be advised but if the progress is slow then you may need to see one of our Musculoskeletal or Sport & Exercise Medicine doctors for further investigations or injections.

Lorena-Testimonial

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).

Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
