The shoulder is the most common joint in the body to dislocate. It occurs when the ball and socket joint of the shoulder come apart. The shoulder can dislocate forwards, backwards or downwards. It may also dislocate partially or completely. Fibrous tissue surrounding the shoulder may be stretched or torn during a dislocation.
Shoulder dislocation is commonly caused by trauma or a sports injury from a contact sport such as rugby. You may dislocate your shoulder if you fall awkwardly or from a height.
A physical examination will usually diagnose a dislocated shoulder. An X ray or MRI of the shoulder will show the dislocation and any other damage surrounding the shoulder joint and help to decide if surgery is necessary to stabilise the joint at a later date.
It is very likely you will have to go to A & E to have the shoulder examined if the shoulder joint cannot be returned to its position at the site of the injury. Afterwards it is important to seek treatment from a physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor for strengthening exercises and a full rehab programme.
Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways. They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition.
Treatment for shoulder dislocation may involve a closed reduction, surgery, immobilisation, pain relief and rehabilitation. Symptoms will improve over a few weeks, but you may be at risk of future dislocations. These can be prevented by an intensive, targeted rehabilitation programme or prolotherapy injections to stabilise the joint.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).
Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
