A groin strain is an injury to the muscles on the inner side of the thigh, known as the adductor muscles. This type of injury can be very painful and needs time to heal.
Groin strain is often caused by playing sports that involve changing direction or twisting and turning. High impact sports and ball sports involving kicking will also predispose to groin strain so it is a common injury for athletes or professional sportsmen to suffer from.
The main symptoms are pain and tenderness in the area of the groin. There might be swelling and bruising of the inner thigh and pain when you open or close your legs. The muscles may feel weak or tight and you may have to limp as you find it difficult moving your leg.
Groin strains are often graded 1 to 3 to categorise the severity of the injury. A grade 1 injury is the least severe with pain and tenderness and will resolve more quickly as the tear or stretch is minor. A grade 2 injury causes pain, weakness and possibly bruising. A grade 3 injury is a severe tear and will cause a lot of pain and bruising.
An accurate history of how the injury occurred will help diagnose a groin strain. You may be asked if you felt a ‘popping sound’ and noticed swelling after the injury. A physical examination will involve feeling the muscle and moving the leg and it may be necessary to have an ultrasound examination or MRI to work out the extent of the damage and the grade of the tear.
Fast treatment with ice and anti-inflammatories will reduce swelling and pain. Resting and raising the leg will help for the first 24 hours followed by gentle movement after 48 hours. Physiotherapy should be arranged to assess the damage and the physio can refer to the Sport & Exercise Medicine Consultants at Blackberry Clinic if you need diagnostic examination with ultrasound. Injections can sometime be required if the condition becomes long standing and resistant to other treatment.

After a course of Prolotherapy my back pain has gone and I live a normal life. I can’t thank Dr Petrides enough for giving me back my quality of life
Following treatment at Blackberry Clinic, Milton Keynes my back pain improved and I could play for my country again
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).
Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
Just wanted to say please pass my thanks to my osteopath, I came yesterday with terrible back and shoulder pain and today I am pain free, am well delighted as had a day planned with friends was worried I wouldn’t enjoy, please pass my thanks onto her.
