Bursitis

Bursitis refers to the inflammation of a bursa. A bursa is a fluid filled sac which is designed to reduce friction between bone and soft tissue structures, creating a smooth gliding surface. The major bursae are located around the hips, knees, shoulders and elbows.

Causes of Bursitis

Bursitis can be related to overuse, a mechanical functional abnormality of joint movement, injury, infection or underlying rheumatic or autoimmune condition.

  • Painful (usually dull and achy)
  • Tender or warm (not always)
  • Swollen or red (not always)
  • More painful when you move it or touch it.
  • Most commonly found in the shoulders, elbows, hips or knees.

Bursitis is usually diagnosed during a physical examination. There is usually localised pain or swelling, tenderness, and pain with movement of the affected area. MRI and ultrasound scans can be used, but are not always necessary.

You can see a physio, osteopath or chiropractor for treatment but if the bursitis does not improve it may respond well to a steroid (cortisone) injection.  Your practitioner will refer you to one of our specialist doctors if they feel this is an appropriate treatment for you.

Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways.  They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition.

Treatments for Bursitis

Physical therapy can strengthen muscles and injections are appropriate to reduce inflammation.

If the bursitis is caused by an infection, this would require medication which can be prescribed by your GP or our specialist doctors who can give you a private prescription.

Blackberry Clinic receives glowing feedback!

Thank you for the physio treatment you have given me over the last few months for my frozen shoulder and bursitis. I am now on no pain relief with a pain score of about 1/10 and that’s because of the ongoing strengthening exercises I am undertaking.

You have been patient, have excellent listening skills and clearly explain the process on getting me better. You reiterated to exercise in a pain free way and I didn’t believe I could be as well as I am today even though I know I have a long term plan for recovery.

Ilqua’s physio put me on the right path to recovery!
