Conditions treated with Scar treatment

Scars can be painful, tight, puckered, bumpy, and have reduced sensation. Scar treatment helps to improve the movement of the scar itself and the surrounding tissue, and softens hard and lumpy areas. Treatment can reduce pain, improve mobility and ease the tension felt from the scar.

Our physiotherapist has been trained in the use of Sharon Wheeler’s scar treatment techniques, an international expert in the field of scar management.

  • Postnatal conditions
  • Postoperative scars eg. total knee replacement, total hip replacement

Frequently asked questions about Scar treatment

We recommend that your scar is at least six weeks old, although you may need to wait until 10-12 weeks. The scar needs to be completely healed (no scabs), not open/leaking/infected. It does not matter how old your scar is, scar treatment can help even if it is many years since you first got the scar.

After a C section many people report having an ‘overhang’ above their scar, and being dissatisfied with how their tummy looks. Once the Doctor is happy it has healed there often is not much further treatment offered. The good news is; there is help for this. Birthing via C Section does not have to result in feelings of un-happiness about your scar. An over-hang can certainly be improved with scar treatment, usually in combination with our guidance on abdominal exercise if there is an abdominal separation ongoing in addition to the presence of the scar. Scar massage can help improve the numbness people can experience in their tummy too.

Absolutely. Scar massage is best applied regularly, in which case self-treatment is vital. Depending on the scar, it can take a few months to address so the more treatment the better. When you see a Women’s Health Physiotherapist for scar treatment, you will usually be taught how to massage your own scar, if you are happy to do so.
