Pelvic floor myofascial release

Myofascial release is a form of manual therapy to the soft tissues on the body, and can be undertaken externally around the pelvis and to the pelvic floor muscles themselves via the vagina.

It would usually be recommended if the pelvic floor muscles are found to be tight/over-active/painful or if there is scarring for example from a birth tear or episiotomy (recent or longstanding).

It may be used as part of birth preparation when working with someone during pregnancy. Myofascial release techniques can help reduce muscle tension, improve oxygenation/blood flow/circulation in the perineum, reduce pelvic pain and improve pelvic floor dysfunction. It can help calm the nervous system by desensitising the area which is often very helpful if the main problem is pain in the area.

Frequently asked questions about Pelvic floor myofascial release

This is a treatment performed by the Women’s Health Physiotherapist to the external areas of the pelvis or the pelvic floor muscles themselves during a vaginal treatment. The physiotherapist may spend 15-20 minutes using gentle, light soft tissue techniques on the vaginal muscles and surrounding areas.

No. Your physiotherapist will ask for your consent for this treatment, which you can withdraw at any point. You will be asked regularly if you are comfortable, and the treatment will be adjusted if there are any problems. It is not helpful to recreate pain with this treatment, and as such the therapist will ensure you are happy throughout.

Yes. Self-treatment of your own pelvic health condition is an asset to your recovery. If you wish, your physiotherapist will teach you how to use your own thumbs (or medical devices which you can purchase) to treat your own pelvic floor muscles at home. You do not have to do this if you are not comfortable to do so. Self-treatment usually yields better and quicker results.
