Swollen Knee

Swelling of the knee occurs when excess fluid accumulates in or around the knee. This is known in medical terms as an effusion.  Some people refer to this as ‘water on the knee’. Sometimes there is swelling at the back of the knee which could be a ‘Baker’s cyst’ or swelling at the front of the knee which is known as ‘Housemaid’s Knee’.

Causes of Swollen Knee

There are many causes of a swollen knee. It may occur as a result of trauma, overuse injuries, or an underlying disease or condition, such as; arthritis, gout, bursitis, cysts.

The knee will feel stiff and look swollen or bigger than normal.  It will be hard to bend.  It may be painful and feel warm to the touch. You may walk with a limp and find it particularly hard to go up and down stairs.

A thorough clinical examination is required to find the cause of the swollen knee. Further diagnostic imaging may be required to highlight any dysfunction. Some fluid may be withdrawn from the knee for further investigation.

If there is a lot of fluid on the knee you should book in with one of our specialist doctors to have some of the fluid removed. This will help to reduce the pain and stiffness and a full examination will determine the best course of treatment. If necessary, a sample of the fluid can be sent for testing to see if there is gout or an infection which might require medication.

Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways.  They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition.

Lorena-Testimonial

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).

Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
