SLAP Lesion

A SLAP tear or SLAP lesion is an injury to the glenoid labrum. This is a cartilage structure that surrounds the ‘socket’ of the shoulder. SLAP means, Superior Labral tear Anterior to Posterior.

A SLAP lesion occurs when there is damage to the superior (top) area of the labrum.

Causes of SLAP Lesion

Most commonly SLAP lesion is caused by falling on your arm. It can be caused by shoulder dislocation or wrenching your arm. Repetitive movements, such as lifting weights or throwing a ball can be another cause. You are more likely to develop a SLAP lesion with age.

  • Pain when lying on the affected shoulder
  • Instability in the shoulder
  • Loss of strength, especially when throwing
  • ‘catching’ sensation in the shoulder
  • Limited range of movement
  •  Dull, throbbing ache in the shoulder
  • Clicking or popping sensation with movement

It can be difficult to diagnose a SLAP lesion as they have similar symptoms to many other conditions. A clinical examination of the shoulder should be able to differentiate between these other conditions. In some cases, an x-ray or MRI after dye injection may be required.

You can see any of our practitioners for most conditions but check out their profiles for more information and specific interests.  Some of our practitioners have a special interest in shoulder injuries and rehabilitation for this condition.

Check out our services pages to find out more about these therapies. Practitioners are trained to treat most conditions but do this in slightly different ways.  They work together to find the best treatment most suited to your condition.

Treatments for SLAP Lesion

A SLAP lesion can be treated with medication, physical therapy, steroid injections or surgery, depending on the severity. At Blackberry Clinic we use a combined approach to manage this condition so you may see a doctor for a steroid injection and then be referred to a physiotherapist or osteopath.

Lorena-Testimonial

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lorena has changed my life. Four months ago, having been diagnosed as having “severe, acute and chronic” disc degeneration I genuinely thought I was facing a life of disability (I am 49).

Lorena has re-taught me how to move my body and how to think about what muscles I engage to a point that I am now running, swimming and doing pilates again and have almost full flexibility in my spine. It almost feels like Lorena can see through your skin to your muscles, so profound is her understanding of how the body moves.
