Shelley Terry, one of our chiropractors at Blackberry Clinic Milton Keynes has these top tips for making sure you get to your holiday destination without any discomfort from travelling!
Many have opted for UK based holidays this year and whilst being able to drive to your holiday destination takes away some of the pressures flying can put on your posture and back, it’s still important to be mindful of your back and neck when driving long distances.
When planning for your trip, make sure you keep out some loose clothing for the journey, not only to keep you cool but to make sure you don’t wear anything that will restrict your movement when driving.
When packing the car for your trip, be conscious of your back at all times as you lift and load. Keep your back straight and relaxed and bend your arms, keeping your load as close to your body as you can. Avoid twisting from the waist. Try to put lighter objects in first, pushing towards the back of your car boot, so that it is not too strenuous to push them in or to pull them out when you reach your destination.
Before you set off remember to check your car seat posture. Ensure the seat position is slightly backwards so that it feels natural, your lumbar support is just nicely supporting your back and that your elbows are at a comfortable and relaxed angle. Try to plan stops to get out and stretch your legs at least every two hours!
When you do arrive have a little walk to loosen your muscles and joints before lifting your bags from the car – and just as you did with loading remember your back whilst lifting.
If you’re staying somewhere that has a harder bed than you’re used to try softening the mattress with spare blankets or quilts. You can always make a firm mattress softer with these extra layers. And remember, if you love your pillow, make sure to pack it so that you get the best sleep possible.
We hope these tips will help make your UK holiday as comfortable as possible!
