What is musculoskeletal medicine?

At Blackberry Clinic we specialise in musculoskeletal conditions causing pain. Examples of the conditions we treat are arthritis, sports injuries, tennis elbow, achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, frozen shoulder, hip pain as well as back pain and neck pain including slipped or prolapsed discs, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and numerous other conditions.

Musculoskeletal Medicine (MSK Medicine) is a specialised medical field dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of problems arising from the musculoskeletal system. This includes injuries and diseases affecting the muscles, bones and joints of the limbs and spine. MSK doctors treat these conditions without surgical intervention. They are medical doctors who often hold additional qualifications in General Practice and Sport & Exercise Medicine. These doctors are experts at diagnosis and perform fluoroscopic x-ray and ultrasound guided pain-relieving injections for acute and chronic conditions including arthritis and sports injuries.

Our Musculoskeletal Medicine and Sport & Exercise Medicine Doctors offer a variety of treatments following a thorough consultation and assessment of the musculoskeletal system. They often refer patients for manual therapy with physios, osteopaths and chiropractors  but offer steroid joint injections, hyaluronic acid injections, prolotherapy, PRP (platelet rich plasma), trigger point injections and other treatments for stubborn cases.

They perform pain relieving injections for severe back pain, such as caudal epidurals, prolotherapy, radiofrequency denervation and nerve root block injections.  See below for a full range of interventional treatments available. They work closely with the local radiologists and it is possible to have an MRI and report within 48 hours depending on location and availability.

Sport and Exercise Medicine Doctors specialise in musculoskeletal conditions.

Sport & Exercise Medicine doctors manage a huge range of injuries and medical conditions affecting elite athletes, amateur sportsmen and the general population.   Our specialists treat acute or chronic sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions like arthritis. They can help prevent further injury and reoccurrence and guide a rehabilitation programme to aid full recovery and a successful return to sport and activity.

Our doctors use fluoroscopic x-ray and ultrasound guidance at most Blackberry Clinics to aid accurate diagnosis and injections. They will refer for MRI or surgery if necessary.  Exercise Medicine consultations are offered, using exercise as a health tool to drive health improvement.
