Running (or even walking) a marathon is a demanding, physical and grueling endurance challenge. To take part in a marathon, even more importantly, to finish a marathon takes a great deal of determination.

Congratulations to all of you who have taken part in the London Marathon on Sunday and good luck to those of you who have signed up to run the Milton Keynes marathon this weekend! It’s marathon season once again and so read on to find out about common marathon related injuries and guidance on how to treat or prevent them.

Running (or even walking) a marathon is a demanding, physical and grueling endurance challenge. To take part in a marathon, even more importantly, to finish a marathon takes a great deal of determination.

Over the last 10-15 years, there has been a dramatic increase in popularity of running marathons. It has been reported yearly incidence rates for injury of those training for marathons appears to be as high as 90%. It is important to note that runners need to train and prepare properly to prevent injuries. After long hours on the course, you may sprain an ankle, pull a muscle or experience a number of other aches and pains, the usual culprits being blisters, chafing and black toenails to name a few!
