Hamstring injury in Athletes

hamstring injury
A recent publication on hamstring injuries in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons discusses the incidence if these injuries are in athletes and the effect they can have on training.

Hamstring tears can be categorised as proximal, muscle belly and distal. The proximal and distal tears occasionally require surgical treatment.

MRI can be used to identify and grade the tear. Non-surgical treatments include eccentric training with occasional use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)which may have the potential to reduce recovery time. This is a favoured protocol of Dr Simon Petrides,  based at Blackberry Clinic Milton Keynes,  when treating these injuries.

Further research with large sample sizes is required to determine how to improve recovery rates and also to evaluate the effectiveness of PRP in accelerating recovery.
