Dr Simon Petrides and Dr Tom Saw have just returned from the annual UK SEM Congress, the largest Sports and Exercise Medicine conference in Europe. This three day event was held at ExCel London from 23rd November, and was attended by approximately 800 delegates.

Organised by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine, the congress is supported by some of the largest governing bodies in British sport, including the Football Association, the Rugby Football Union and UK Athletics. Its aim is to showcase the most ground breaking research in Sports Science, Medicine, Conditioning, Rehabilitation and Performance Coaching.

During more than 120 lectures, internationally renowned speakers from 15 countries around the world promulgated the beneficial effects of exercise, which can help everything from obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure to depression, back pain and arthritis.

The exhibition hall included a 60 metre running track, a swimming pool and an event arena where competitors from numerous sports allowed delegates the opportunity to get up close and personal to better facilitate the exchange of ideas, during 150 workshops.

In addition to benefitting from the congress itself, Simon and Tom also met a number of doctors who have previously worked in the Blackberry Clinic, including:

  • Dr Phil Bell: ATP Tour and Wimbledon Lawn Tennis doctor, ex-England Cricket team doctor.
  • Dr Charlotte Cowie: British Taekwondo doctor, ex-Tottenham Hotspur Football Club doctor, Olympic medical officer.
  • Dr Bryan English: ex-Chelsea Football Club doctor.
  • Dr Richard Weiler: West Ham United Football Club doctor.
  • Dr Eleanor Tillet: National Governing Body doctor for Figure Skating, Team GB at the 2010 Winter Olympics, GB Women's Basketball and England Women's Football.
  • Dr Annabel Carter: Sports and Osteopathic Physician, Bermuda.

It was great to see them all and we are proud to see our colleagues doing so well.
